The Port was established in September 1986 under a Presidential decree as, to manage and operate all ports within the country .The company was firstly introduced as an authority. It is wholly (100%) owned by the government of the Republic of Maldives and functions under the Ministry of Transport and Communication. Later the regulatory functions of the port was transferred to the Ministry of Transport and Communication and the commercial functions was corporatized as Maldives Ports Limited on 31st July 2008.
