Postal service in the Maldives was introduced in 1906. With a history of over 119 years, the postal sector of Maldives has undergone a paradigm shift from being a medium of communication to a facilitator of goods in an era of global internet connectivity. The first key change in the postal sector has been the introduction of new means of communication, which entered into direct competition with the traditional postal communication business. Maldives Post Limited is a limited liability company formed in 1994 and is fully owned by the government with a mandate of providing postal service across the nation and abroad under Universal Postal Service Obligation (USO). Maldives Post is the National Postal Operator as mandated by the Postal Law of the Maldives, with a network of 15 Atoll Post Offices and 172 Postal agencies across the nation providing access to postal service in all inhabited islands.
