STELCO, established in 1949 with a mere 14 kW capacity, initially served only 50 homes in Malé. Over the decades, it functioned as a government department before becoming the State Electric Company Limited in 1997. Now, STELCO provides electricity to over 80,973 customers, operating 35 independent power plants, 7 water desalination plants, and 5 sewerage networks across various islands.
